The Council
Alpha
The leading pair. These wolves are mated for life, and as such are fiercely loyal and protective of one another. An alpha is never alone long, and one of their first and top priorities is to find another Alpha. Together, they produce pups for the pack, make and enforce laws, care for the pack, and make important decisions for the welfare of the pack. The word of an Alpha is law. In times of famine or in smaller packs, they are the only two to breed. In larger packs and in times of plenty, they will allow trusted and/or dominant pairs to breed as well.
CAM/CAF
Beta
Essentially the second in command, Betas oversee the Deltas, and even take over in the absence of an Alpha. Often times these wolves will be sent to rival packs to represent their Alphas, or take over the training of the Gammas. Consider them secondary Alphas.
CBM/CBF
Delta
Tried and proven, these wolves are the best each rank has to offer. They represent their respective ranks in Pack meetings, train their members and organize patrols and exercises. They are often either chosen from the current group, or are former Gammas.
Delta Ranger
CDR
Delta Hunter
CDH
Delta Guardian
CDG
Gamma
Offspring of the council (and sometimes the pack itself ) hand selected for specific training. They will be taught to become future Deltas, Betas, and even Alphas. Worthy pups who have shown potential are chosen after being observed as Yearlings. When it comes time to chose their adulthood rank, the Council will select from the new adults of the season.
CGM
The Life-Source
Also referred to as the 'Subordinates'
Ranger
Swift, cunning and sneaky. These wolves are the eyes and ears of the pack. Dispersed throughout the territory, they seek out the locations of herds, dangers, and report back on the statuses of the land. They often go out in pairs or more, as going solo can prove quite dangerous. They report their findings to their Delta, who will relay the information to the Council. However, in urgent cases or emergencies, they can go straight to a Beta or Alpha. Due the danger they face and the skill required, Rangers are often quite cocky and arrogant. Rangers are not as skilled in fighting or confrontation as Guardians, but have basic self defense knowledge and training. They are flight over fight.
CPR
Hunter
Without them, the pack would starve. Strong, intelligent and determined, these wolves hunt food for the pack. Hunters always travel in groups, as at least two or more wolves are needed to bring down a deer, and even more for larger game. It is severely frowned upon for a hunter to go solo (unless told to find small game), as hunting is viewed as a necessity to survival, not sport. Hunts are formed by the Delta Hunter or Beta. When not out on hunts, they are often found teaching the youngsters and yearling the basics of hunting, usually with mice or dead rabbits.
CPH
Guardian
Strong, brave and courageous. These wolves protect the pack and act as the muscle. Trained fighters, they are the soldiers, guards and protectors. Guardians can be found stationed around the den site, keeping watch over their secret haven. When not stationed, they often spar or form training sessions to keep up their skill. Guardians also serve as the peace keepers and law enforcers of the pack. Should danger show itself in their land, they are the ones to face it, either under their Delta, Beta or Alpha, depending on the severity.
CPG
The Fervent
Mother
Females that have taken a break from their duties to rear their young. Once pregnant, they may choose when to take on the new rank, though it is mandatory once it affects their performance. They will keep this rank their health has returned, as the caring of their pups is spread throughout the pack (once weaned).
CPM
Yearling
Big, clumsy paws and eager to prove themselves. These are the rowdy and playful teens of the pack, currently training to become their future rank. This is also the time when they are observed by the pack, determining where in the dominance chain they will be placed upon adulthood.
CPY
Pup
Small little balls of fluff who's sole purpose is to terrorize the adults, and be adorable. They are protected and cherished by the entire pack.
CPP
Elder
Those who have served their pack well, and have now retired to a well earned rest. They keep alive the history of the pack in stories and lessons, and aid the Council, as their experience and wisdom is valued. Elders are shown the highest respect, even from the Council members.
CPE
The Petty
Crow Chaser
A step above Omega, these wolves are serving a temporary punishment. Once their time has been served, they are returned to their original ranking. Their task? Keep crows and other pests way from their kills.
In severe cases, they may be downgraded to Omega. When there are no current Crow Chasers, the task falls to the Omegas.
CCC
Omega
Those that, for one reason or another, have ended up at the bottom of the pecking order. They are often here by punishment, breeding, personality, etc. These wolves are scapegoats and punching-bags, often acting as stress relief for the rest of the pack. Very much under-appreciated, these peacemakers help keep the pack's sanity.
